Brian or knowledge base.
Some mobile robots are controlled by remote -- a human tells them what to do and when to do it. The remote control might communicate with the robot through an attached wire, or using radio or infrared signals.
Some robots can interact socially they can recognizes human body language and voice inflection and responds appropriately. Creators are interested in how humans and babies interact, based only on tone of speech and visual cue. This low-level interaction According to the way it’s programmed. So they decide whether they -like learning system.
Robots are more accurate model of human intelligence

ReplyDeleteArea of impact: Education
Presentation of the issue:
• People and machines: the children may not be able to interact with the robot teachers as they used to with their human teachers. This will have a negative psychological effect on the kids.
IT background:
• The artificial intelligence technology has been developed to create robots that can teach at school; take roll-calls and give homework.
• Robots have been created to react to real human expressions such as happiness or sadness and this will soon be implemented in schools.
• Robots are made in such a way that they can have human attributes; figure, beauty etc.
Impact of the issue:
• Since, robots are good at imitating people, learning and socialising with them, it means eventually they will teach humans. This is a good impact since humans will benefit.
• A robot is programmed on what to do and, therefore, there would be no interaction with the children especially at ages of school entry. This is a negative impact because there will be no personal contact between the robot teachers and students.
• Impact of the issue is that the teachers will lose their jobs and the government will be saving a lot of money.
Solutions to the problems arising:
• Robot teachers should work along with human teachers to interact personally with the students; this will make the students feel that they are in a human and friendly environment. The limitation to the solution is that the robot teacher may overrule the human teacher; not co-operate with the human teacher and work according to its preset program.

ReplyDeletePresentation of the issue
Robots are taking over the health sector slowly, doing routine surgeries and now most commonly biopsies. They have been seen to be more efficient and possibly completely take over the role of doctors. Robots are able to come within 2mm of the center of the suspected tumorous tissue, a job not common with the traditional methods.
Having computers take over raises questions about their reliability and our dependency on them to carry out a job usually done by humans
It background:
The computers are fed with information from the doctors about what to do and then the computers tell the machines which carry out the procedure on the patient.
Impact of the issue:
The computers are more reliable, have better precision, because they don’t make mistakes like doctors would
The ability to reason is lacking in computers and therefore they cannot comprehend unusual situations.
Who is accountable when the computer makes a mistake?
Certain surgical professions are made obsolete with the introduction of the robots.
The robots can be manipulated to perform unauthorized surgeries that could be intended to be fatal.
Dealing with different patients with
Solutions to the problems:
The availability of a kill switch that could stop all robot functions if it encounters a foreign situation since it cannot reason.
The introduction of artificial intelligence could increase the level of intelligence that enables the robots to manipulate unfamiliar situations
Upgrading the security of the computers like use of passwords, to prevent it from being manipulated.
ROBOT VACUUM CLEANERS by Alicia and Sherina
ReplyDeletePresentation of the issue
Neato Robotics, a Silicon Valley startup pioneering new products to free people from household chores, announced it will begin shipping its first Neato XV-11 home robot vacuum cleaners to consumers
IT background
Using its laser-based Room Positioning System (RPS) Technology, the new robot vacuum cleaner has a 360-degree view of a room, allowing it to map the most efficient cleaning path by analyzing walls, furniture, doorways and other obstacles up to four meters aaway. It avoids most obstacles that other robots can only detect by impact. Once it outlines the designated area, the Neato XV-11 covers the perimeter first and then methodically cleans inside it using a back-and-forth pattern to ensure complete floor coverage.
• Scuff-Free Navigation: At the vacuum’s core is a centrifugal compression impeller that follows jet engine airflow principles. It creates sustained high-powered suction, allowing the Neato XV-11 to thoroughly pick up dirt and debris.
• Low-profile Access: The robot’s RPS technology constantly updates its internal map so it can accurately detect objects greater than four inches in height and carefully clean around them without damaging furniture and walls.
• Smart Design and Large Dirt Bin: : The robot vacuum cleaner’s low profile (less than four inches high) allows it to clean under beds, sofas, and toe-kicks in the kitchen.
• Self-docking to Re-power: After completing its cleaning, it returns automatically to its base to re-charge itself. By utilizing the charging base, the robot is charged and ready to go when it’s needed most
• Cleaning Scheduler: With its easy-to-use interface, consumers can schedule the robot to clean every day, resulting in a more spotless home.
Impacts
The stakeholders are the consumers.
The energy savings it conserves from its cleaning efficiency has been redirected to the world’s most powerful robotic vacuum system.
The suggested manufacturer’s retail price is $399. The Neato XV-11 includes a 30-day money back guarantee and a one-year limited hardware warranty. 2 In addition to ordering on the Neato Robotics website, the Neato XV-11 will be available for pre-order via retail and online channel partners such as Amazon.com
Many of these little robots are still priced out of range for most families. They can be quite expensive even for the lesser quality models, which makes it difficult for many people to purchase and use them in their homes. Within a few more years, the price should go down quite a bit but for now they are still pretty pricey.
Another disadvantage is that they run on battery power. Depending on your model, you might have to spend more on batteries, because these little vacuums tend to drain them quite quickly. However, many of them have batteries that automatically recharge after they are done cleaning. Even these batteries can wear down with time though, and you will not get as much of a charge out of them.
Solutions
Use an alternate power source, such as solar power to charge the vacuums. It is cleaner and cheaper.

Presentation of the Issue:
-The security of the children in the presence of this robot
-Reliability of the robot can be questioned.
-There may be a problem of equality of access as not everyone would have access to the robot
-Accountability. who is morally responsible for leaving the children in the care of the robots?
-Generally they translation to check students understanding of what they just said.
I.T background
-they have a computer in them that controls the circuit and everything attached.
-they have a sensory system which enables them to move, hear, smell or taste.
Impact of the issue
-stakeholders are the parents of the children and the manufacturers of the robot the children may also be stakeholders.
-Issues of their children's safety is questioned by the parents.
-To the parents and the government, the robots work 24hrs without complaining and don't require any form of reward. they improve language skills of the children since many languages can be programmed.
The robots on the other hand may have sharp parts that may injure the children.
- the robots can be reprogrammable.
Solutions to the issues.
- there should be a supervisor to watch over the children as well as the robot. this could lessen chances of worries of insecurity of the children by the parents.
ROBOT TEACHER SMILES, SCOLDS IN CLASSROOM
ReplyDeleteby SOLOMON
ANALYSIS OF THE ISSUE
The Japanese have developed a human looking robot called SAYA who is to help out with some of the activities teachers do in class. Among its special abilities, he can carry out student roll calls, smile, and scold. It can express six basic emotions which are surprise, fear, anger, happiness, disgust, and sadness. According to the developers, though the robot cannot entirely replace teachers, it can act as an educational aid and provide a solution for the growing labor shortage problem in institutions like schools.
HOW IT WORKS IT
The face of the robot is outlined with a rubber skin which is pulled from the back with motors and wiring around the eyes and the mouth. This enables it to make the different facial expressions.
It’s just remote-controlled by a human watching the interaction through cameras. The camera records the robot’s environment then transmits the information to the human controlling it who in turn relays back instructions for it to follow.
It is also programmed to automatically carryout simple tasks like saying “thank you”
IMPACT (ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES) -STAKEHOLDERS
SAYA will be able to reduce the work load of teachers and this means that teachers being aided by this robot will be able to dedicate more reproductive time on their students. The robots increase the efficiency of teaching since they are consistent, and have way longer endurance than human teachers. They are less prone to making mistakes and this help in situations where the teacher to student ration is too low. This in general is beneficial to the school institution in that the teachers they employ are utilized well without stressing them.
Students also gain a lot from the presence of the robot in that they gain more from the improved standards of teaching they receive. Robots also make lesson periods more interesting.
The problem is that the robots have neither intelligence nor the ability to learn nor any identities hence need to be controlled by a highly trained expert who sometimes can be very expensive to hire.
Since robot technology is still new, the costs of buying any one model of SAYA is very high and a school institution would have to think twice before thinking of even getting it.
SOLUTIONS
More research in human-robot interaction is needed before overly relying on robots.
